Spring 2000 Issue |
When Global Possibilities president Ms. Casey Coates Danson decided to build her new house atop Mandeville Canyon in Los Angeles, the environmental activist put solar energy at the top of her priorities. She was practicing what she preached, since Global Possibilities is "an environmental non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the use of solar energy in the United States to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and mitigate climate change through sustainable design curriculum development". (http://www.globalpossibilities.org) Her determination to live on an environmentally clean power source made PV the obvious choice. All of her south-facing roofs were appropriated for solar energy, and lots of big skylights also contributed to energy savings by providing abundant natural lighting. SES installed a 6.3 kW system, the largest residential system in the L.A. area, distributed over three 7:12 metal standing-seamroofs. The panels deliver solar DC electricity to a solar equipment room in the garage, where two inverters capable of handling 11 kW output AC power transform the solar energy for use in AC circuits in the house, feed it back to the utility meter, or replenish a bank of 32 batteries with a total of 24 kWh storage capacity, to prepare the system for night time and cloudy day usage.
