Are there any new energy innovations out there to help us kick our petroleum habit? The answer might lie in a microscopic single-cell plant, a landfill or an iconic building.

Now, watch what some are calling “Innovation Idol,” where the studio audience votes for the best idea and awards a Planet Forward Innovator of the Year. Here, you can vote for your favorite, too!

Our panel of experts weighed in on each innovator’s ideas based on originality, sustainability and commercial viability. These include: Jennifer Granholm, former governor of Michigan, Andrew Revkin, who writes the Dot Earth blog for the New York Times and Thomas Connelly, Jr., executive vice president and chief innovation officer for DuPont.
